With any luck at all I'll be trading my boat for a 1980 coupe shortly. It's not a perfect car, but not bad and seems to be fair for the value of the boat. As far as I can tell it's a pretty pedestrian '80, 350/automatic, black, needs a fair amount of TLC but overall not bad.
Here's my question - What are the good, bad and uglies to look at/for in a 1980? Again, not looking at this as a collector / investment car. It will be a driver and will ultimatly be modded.
I'm just wondering about any known issues or concerns about that particular year.
Thanks! Excited to possibly be back after all these years
There is nothing that comes to mind that is different about a 1980 versus other years. I understand you aren't looking for a collector but you have to make sure the price you are paying is correct for the condition of the car. Anyway you can post photos of exterior, interior, engine compartment, and frame front and back?
Sounds like fun, Bob. Like MelWff said, post pics and we can help you out. Nothing really particular for the 80s that I know of as far as known issues. Of course, check underneath for rust, and check for any signs of major past damage. It's easy to get a car that will be worth less than you put into it, especially if it needs a lot. Does it run well? Shift well? Are the body & paint ok? Those can run up the bill pretty quick. But if you enjoy working on it (which you really have to if you're going to own a driver '80), you can write a lot of that off
The guy is bringing the car up to look at the boat and I'll get chance to look her over and drive here then - probably Thursday or Saturday. I'll take some pics and post them then along with other info / impressions I develop at that time.
...this one is an automatic, but I wouldn't rule out a conversion at some point down the road...
FWIW: possibly not worth your time and effort. If a 4 speed is a deal breaker for you, wait until a 4 speed car comes along. The 4 speed for 1980 was limited to the L-48 base engine cars.

not a deal breaker - just a " would be fun" - with my knees lack of a clutch is probably a good thing.
