Default steering wheel unstable

Hi all. I just bought a C3 corvette from '79 and the steering wheel doesn't look firm. Also, when I break, the car tends to go to the left side...does anyone know what type of problem I am describing?
Thank you
Dave.

Just the title shook me up .

Check rag joint , maybe a brake sticking .....put it up on lift and go over it. Old ignored vetted usually gather up a bunch of issues .

ASAP

Don't take chance getting hurt or hating somebody else

I am not sure what a firm steering wheel looks like. Your pull when brakin could be worn suspension or bad brakes.

By unstable I mean that when I turn the steering wheel to the right, the wheel doesn't go to the right right away...there seems to be like a delay...the steering wheel itself feels loose...
then when I break the car tends to go to the left...
Thanks
d.

Really sounds like you have worn front suspension and steering parts, and possibly the rag-joint also as LS4 suggested. That's something you should get checked out, it can be dangerous.

Thanks a lot for your insight. I agree, driving it felt like I could crash anytime...I'm new into this, so now I know, hehe

I agree that the first thing to check is the rag joint but it also sounds like he might be talking about a loose steering column if he has a tilt wheel . The bolts come loose inside the column and need to be re-tightened and lock tight put on the threads.

Take a look at the pictures in this thread and see if it might be your problem.

bj1K,

I think you just nailed what could be going on with my 79. The steering is tight and responsive, but the whole column moves up and down (north & south) ....I just printed a exploded view of the tilt steering column and need to get this tightened up and lock tighted as you suggested. How long should this take?

Thanks

I took a weekend. It's quite a chore to get to those bolts and assemble it again.

I'd like to point out that this is not the original poster, and has a different problem, for those following along.

I'm not sure he has a different problem. It sounds like he has both problems ,rag joint and loose steering column bolts. My 72 had both problems when I first bought it. They are both a common problem .
