If your engine runs smoothly it could be an exhaust leak.
My problem was caused by a leaking exhaust where the exhaust manifold connected to the "down-pipe" on the driver's side.
I had to soak the three nuts that held the exhaust pipe flange in place with rust remover.......then remove the nuts....clean the threads on the studs......install new nuts and torque them down (my exhaust connection did not use a flat exhaust gasket or a "donut"......yours may have either or none).
The leak is easy to hear when it is at the gasket between the head and the exhaust manifold, but my leak was further down.
I couldn't hear one either at the flange because of the semi-loud mufflers.
I held a piece of paper about 1/2" wide by 4" long by one end....I moved it around the flange and it began fluttering when it got near the leaking area.
A leak is the easiest problem to check for. Burned points in the distributor would be next on the list.

what cause the popping sound in my exhaust when I let off the gas
Its a rich condition caused by very high manifold vacuum drawing in a larger amount of idle fuel then the unburned fuel will POP inside the header pipes. Try leaning the idle mixture a 1/4 turn or so.
It's not unusual for a open exhaust to gurgle and pop on deceleration.
You may not have anything wrong.
My 08 with dual mode exhaust gurgles and pops on decal when the mufflers are open.
My 79 pops and gurgles on decel. Stock mufflers and no cat, rejetted carb, adjusted advance and curve. It's just the sound of an opened up exhaust on a V8.
