I am researching the availability of a new driveshaft for my '82. The reason is that I had my differential rebuilt by a vendor, had noise in it after rebuild which turned out to be a bad new bearing and noticed it was also leaking at the pinion. After the second rebuild and seal replacement I have driven about 160 miles and it is leaking again. Supposedly the input yoke is good but I don't know if it was measured with a micrometer or not. It has also been suggested that the driveshaft may be out of balance. With 140K plus miles I guess that is a possibility but I have not felt any vibrations to speak of. I've read that it may be just as costly to buy a new driveshaft as it is to have mine tested (wherever you do that). So now I am looking for pricing on a new driveshaft and don't find any for my year at the usual sources. Any recommendations are appreciated and I'll check them out. Thanks!
You don't need a new drive shaft. If you don't believe me take it to any DS shop and have them check the balance on it. I'm sure it is fine. You may need a new end yoke or slip yoke. A close inspection of each will tell. look for any signs of wear and replace as needed. You may also need to replace the seals.
Thanks guys. I appreciate your replies. I tend to think like Ely that my driveshaft is good but the yoke might have problems. This may be a warranty issue that I just need to confirm on my end. The price for a new one at Ft Wayne Clutch isn't bad either.
