So I've been reading on the forum the last week about what all can cause the rattle in my shifter. I keep hearing people talking about the ball itself causing all the noise.
Way into work today I decided to try it and unscrewed the ball.
I'll be damned..... found the noise. Thanks to everyone for making this place useful and fun
Now... where did I put my teflon tape....
So will a couple of wraps of Teflon tape...or a spot of low-strength Loctite. And, your fingers won't get nicked up making power shifts around that shift ball!!
[I've never witnessed a new 4-speed car with a 'jamb' nut under any shift ball.]
....[I've never witnessed a new 4-speed car with a 'jamb' nut under any shift ball.]
What do you mean by a "new" 4 speed car? If you mean a C-5, for instance, the shifter lever has a notch in it, similar to a crankshaft. The shift **** threads on, then a piece similar to a woodruff key slips into the notch, and locks the shift **** in place.
Years ago, I installed 2 Hurst shifter in two different cars that I had owned. They were both GM 4 speed cars, and both of the shifters came with the white "cue ball" *****, and both used a jamb nut, to lock the ball in position.
So I swung into the local autozone and while they didn't have a jam nut on the shelf, the guy happen to have a Hurst Shifter in the back of his truck with a jam nut that I could HAVE. for ffrrreeeeeeeeeee. I tried to pay him directly, he wasn't having it. Awesome guys there. Well... there are a couple awesome ones there, the rest are your typical clowns.
Anyway, have the jam nut threaded down the shifter, thread the ball down as tight as I can by hand and..... it still rattles.
Do I really need to put a wrench on this jam nut and tighten it even more? Just don't want to break anything.

If it rattles.with the nut on it its something else. Hold the ball up to your ear and ratlle it, maybe something weird is going on inside it. Sounds stupid but ya nevah know.
Maybe the weight of it is causng something to rattle in the stick. With the ball off while rour driving put a fnger on the top of the stick and slowly push down to stop mulate the.ball weight. Weird things can happen. Good luck
I tell you all what's krazy, my hurst shifter bar has a REAL 8 ball on top, and resides on the muncie support and uses one shifter bar to operate a 200 4r automatic.....car used to be a 4 speed '72.......
so this summer I running the a/c a LOT because of all the foul weather.....and I noted the shifter would vibrate like KRAZY when engine hit 2500 rpm.....I thinking drive shaft/alignment?? and so noting it was in any gear.....so not the drive shaft....WTF?? went to do something minor on the engine, and noted something strange on the a/c mount so drove it with a/c off, hit 2500 rpm and turn on/off the a/c and note the vibration was crazy mad with a/c ON.....WTF??? so looking around the mount and checking bolts are snug.....
it has a '88-91 serp drive on front, and the top/outer bolt broke off in the head..... replaced the bolt after removing the broken part from the head.....and added the rear support bracket I THINK was there from some 20 years ago when I put the serp drive on....
been a while..... a broken acc. drive mounting bolt causing shifter vibrations.....talk about off the wall crap....THAT's IT!!!!!!

Haven't had the driveshaft balanced but I don't notice a vibration via seat of the pants. To get the ball to stop the rattle it takes nothing more than slight pressure from laying my hand on the shifter ball.
I haven't had a chance to back the ball so it's aligned correctly then tighten the nut up to it, I've only hand tightened the ball down onto the nut that was all the way at the bottom of the shifter.
I really am not expecting different results when I redo it as they accomplish the same thing but who knows, maybe I just don't have it tight enough and the wrench will take care of that. I'll give it a shake while I have it off to see if I can hear anything in there.
In my C2- w/ a Hurst shifter- had the same issues- put your hand w/ a little pressure it went away. Yes- the ball is rattling but it's not the root of problem. There was no noticeable seat of the pants vibration feel - but after replacing the u-joints and having the driveshaft balanced -it went away.
