Default Nuts and Bolts

Morning everyone, Does anyone have a list of colors or plating of the nuts and bolts used on the 1970 Corvette. Some of mine has lost their contrast over the years and it is hard to tell what color they were. Mainly for the chassis and bumper components. Thanks Droop

Default My experience …..

I think either black or silver. Silver was "silver cadmium" not sure how the made black. I have heard "black cadmium" but I am not sure if there is such a thing.

I once looked for a pattern regarding what was used. I would use silver zinc or silver cadmium for the bumper bolts. For the bolts that went to the frame or attached anything to the frame, I would use black zinc or black cadmium as the call it.

Some bolts seemed to be plated with gray phosphate. Washers and lock washers matched the bolts.

But, in reality, I believe you could find all sorts of combinations. Head stamps varied and so did colors. Not sure if I helped you out much. You can also google corvette frame assembly line pictures. I have seen pictures and you can get ideas on what color the bolts were.

Hi D,
There were various finishes on the fasteners originally.
It depended how much protection, and for how long the protection was desired, as to what the finish was.
The finishes were typically cadmium, zinc, manganese phosphate, black oxide, and natural.
The location the fastener is intended for must be determined to know what the typical finish would have been. The same or very similar bolt configuration could be seen in zinc, black oxide, and natural, for instance, depending on where it's used.
Generally the bolts used on the bumper brackets, and from the brackets to the bumpers, were black oxide and zinc.
Regards,
Alan

Here for example are:

Some of the fasteners for the rear suspension in zinc, black oxide, manganese phosphate, and natural.

Some of the fasteners for the front suspension in zinc, zinc dichromate, black oxide, manganese phosphate, and natural.
