Satin it is, I spent today getting the engine compartment sanded and filling miscellaneous holes left by bubba. It looks like Chevrolet painted and then sealed everything in sight on the firewall especially around the heater/AC box, what a pain in the ***! I think I'll paint the firewall and fender wells first and then sand and paint the frame and crossmember.
Satin or semi-FLAT black (about the same sheen, but different mfgrs. may use different names) for the engine compartment surfaces. Black components in the engine compartment get semi-gloss black paint.
Original Krylon is fine...if you can find it. But, the JD Blitz black is a dead-ringer for the same color and sheen of the Krylon AND it is more durable and the paint sprays on better. Get it at any JD sales & supply store. Big cans; good price.
I've been restoring vintage JD lawn and garden tractors for many years as a hobby. I always shoot John Deere Blitz black on the frames and various other black parts. It's perfect for a Corvette engine bay too.
I also use JD medium gloss black if I want a bit more shine but still not a glossy finish. You can buy both types by the quart or gallon for paint gun use. Best to use JD's thinner too. I do a 5:1 paint/thinner mixture for gun work. I've also sprayed Blitz and med gloss mixed 50-50. It's right on for a rat rod paint job, to my eyes anyway.
