Which dash piece? Driver side lower I would at least drop the column if not completely removing it. Top pad I took out each window pillar trim and even then I had to flex the top pad slightly to get it out.

Go slow and don't force it.

It's been a while, Dave, but it's pretty straight forward. Remove the two pillar covers and then remove the screws holding the dash to the lower panels. There's also one holding it in each door. Don't force it as it's probably the original and can be easily cracked. (Ask me how I know.) I may have missed something so others may chime in.

You might want to pick up a GM shop manual for your car along with the assembly manual. They're well worth the investment. Good luck.

I think there`s an additional brace that bolts to the fire wall and the bottom of the pad.... just right of center?

As Jud said-

PLUS-

To remove the side windshield header panels- you have to remove (can just loosen the sides as it's they are tucked underneath it) the sunvisors AND top windshield header panel.

Two screws on each side of both left ad right panels- three across the top - then two bolts to drop the steering column.

You WILL have to flex the dash edges to remove it- carefully. Even if the windshield is out!!! Oh- there are 6 clips attaching the back of the dash to the base of the windshield that just might be rusted tight.

My windshield is out and it's still a tight fit.

Good luck!!

Richard

Thanks folks, it was the little flex that was the trick. Just can't believe how dry all these components are, they are extremely brittle I can see replacements in the future.

Thanks again.

As things age they dry out and get brittle. I know that as I age I am getting dryer and more brittle.

No such luck, I have decided to see what other wonders the car has in store for me! Now that the dash / AC / wiring and an old mouse nest had been removed it seems there are some minor bird cage issues to resolve at the bottom corners of the windows.

The body now lives on a recently acquired body dolly and I can move it around easily.
