hello to all and still enjoying my old gal which is running very well lately and have not done much since the ordeal with the brakes.i am running flowmaster 40's and love the sound but have always had a resonating sound in mid rpm range that does not sound good.it is not the drone ,which has cost me the company of my gf,but is more like a rattling sound.just put the t-tops back on and it is less noticeable now.my question is can these cheap ss flex pipes be causing this noise?
thanks guy's but Mel the drone i can live with it's the rattle i don't like.i looked up the dynomax vt's and i wonder if they would also eliminate the rattle.is it the 17157 model for our cars?do they sound like the 40's.gungatim you are clearly a man of few words but have you experienced this?
Well, adding mass to the suspected culprit should let you know if that sound changes...or not. Just wrap that flex pipe in something that won't melt or catch fire and listen to sound, again. If nothing changes, it isn't the flex pipe. If it changes for the better, maybe wrap the flex pipe in fiberglass heat wrap stuff.
It's a bit of 'trial and error' to find an offending resonance. But, that's basically the process. Add mass to the suspect item and listen for change. You'll know it when you "don't" hear it.

yes. just kidding, but yeah, have seen flex pipe like that vibrate and resonate lots of times. not specifically with your setup, but flex pipe in general. where production vehicles need flexible connections they use a resonator to absorb the sound induced. run rigid pipe whenever possible, or as suggested, wrap it up with a bunch of muffler patch to try and calm it down some...a good wrap of asbestos cast would be great, but it's tough to find anymore...
thanks gungatim but i have inhaled so much asbestos in my lifetime i consider myself lucky to be alive.(steamfitting).i will try the wrap and report back my findings as it might help someone else.
update on this for those who have experienced it.put very thin crap muffler bandage on the flex pipes and the rattling is reduced by at least half.no doubt this is the cause.thanks everyone for the advise.
