Glad for normal repair
Put on a warm coat and hat and took the convert out to check if adding a second spring to the right hood latch would keep it from popping open on bumpy roads. Didn't work. But- it was a nice day for a last top-down drive until.... snap, whak, whak, whak noise coming from left front. Then it stopped. thought it was maybe a branch under the car until I noticed the ammeter pegged on almost full discharge. Car was not overheating, so fan belt was still in place. Drove home and put tester on alternator with car running and got less than 12 volts. Was actually glad it was a normal, easy to diagnose, easy to fix problem. How sick is that. I think it is a symptom of too much time on the creeper under the car.
