Default Another side pipe question

Hi everyone, I have stainless side pipes on my 81 and I love them, but I hate that they tarnish when I have to drive in the rain, so I was thinking about the chrome ones from Doug's or hookers. Can anyone tell me if they get any discoloration at the collectors, or any issues with the chrome? Thanks

I can't answer your question, but I will buy your pipes if you change

Seriously. Are they Hooker? Looks like it from the photos.

Billy Boat Exhaust in Phoenix makes stainless header sidepipes and ceramic coats them shiny sterling silver. Ask for Mike Boat once SEMA show finishes.

TTT, someone must have chrome pipes, and can let me know if they discolor or tarnish, or if they just rust eventually.

Chrome exhaust will, just like a motorcycle, turn yellow and blue where the temp is the hottest, near the cylinder heads. They will rust first where the 4 headpipes join at the collector.

I had a chrome set of hooker side pipes in the 80s. They discolored quickly. I think it took about 6 months to start peeling. Was not a good purchase imo.

I have my chrome hookers for 10 years now. They do discolor where they come out of the heads but the collectors look fine, no discoloration. But the chrome is starting to rust and pit slightly where the 4 pipes enter the collector. Not bad but if you look up close you can see it. I think you have to look at how your car is driven. I never take it out in bad weather or rain. If I do get stuck in a rain storm I'm doing the same thing, cleaning the water spots off the chrome. If I drove my car in rain, bad weather I probably would have went with Stainless. No rust but more up keep. Hope this helps.

I have the chrome Hooker big block pipes and they started to rust at the collectors when they were 1 year old. They're to the point now that I either need to have them blasted and coated or paint them black. Next time I'll get stainless.

Default Ss

You guys are making feel better about my purchase of stainless steel sidepipes. I know they were more money, but I didn't want to be bothered with the rust. I guess you pay now or pay later. The headers are on. The pipes are going on after primer and paint. I'll be curious as to how the OP's install goes.

I have been running my ss pipes for a few years and love em, they installed great, hope my second set installs as good, definitely learned a lot from my first set, actually my ss set was half the cost of chrome

When you mounted the headers/side pipes, how did you hang your a/c and alternator? I'm thinking of doing this to my 69 but everything hangs off the exhaust manifolds......

I bought my pipes (Hookers) from a swap meet, very rusted. I had them JetHot coated.
The car is not finished, but I'll let you know how they hold up.

The cans are identical to what commercial trucks use, so I bought a set of those to mount with new internal mufflers. The chrome is very stout on those!
