68 Frame differances

Default 68 Frame differances

Could someone tell or show me the difference of a 1968 frame verses 69 or newer frame 4 speed

The front frame horns are different on 68 and 69 Corvettes. In 68 the radiator support bolted to the frame horn directly, and in 69 it bolted to the front cross member. The bolt hole pattern in the frame for mounting the front frame extensions are also not the same.

Early 68 frames also did not have the angle braces in the rear kick up area. Later 68 production did, but the above differences still held true.

Thanks Much I see the difference now .I just got a 68 L88 project with pretty rusty frame but I see now Zipp corvette parts makes some parts to repair it .will take some work but trying to keep everything as original as possible

Hi Wes, here is a picture of the rear section of a 69 frame.













the angled gussets and the upkick pieces came from Zip.

Thanks Through the help of great forum members like yourself I found that the 68 frame has an extra length and hole just in front of the place where the front sway bar mounts and no brace where you showed in the rear picture . Since Zipp makes the exact pieces to repair my rusted places I will attempt to repair my original frame since it came with the 68 L 88 I JUST GOT .Wish I could weld like you but my Dad was a wood guy and not many wood pieces on a Corvette .
I do not have the tank sticker as yet but I was able to track down an old mechanic that worked at the dealer when the car was delivered to Detroit in 68 and going to go meet with him he recalls the car since in those days they only got a few vettes a year .
Keep up the good work .I am meeting Mr L 88 at the Chicago show in a few weeks to gain as much information as I can who knows maybe the 68 L 88 will be worth something some day.
Have a great day I am taking some out of town guest to some distilleries here in Kentucky (hard work) today

in the case of the 68 chassis I got for my 69 the larger rear frame supports had to be added, the smaller triangle gussets were there...pictures are in my build thread,

The early 68 frames are same as C2 frames. Meaning 63-67 vettes. Knowing this might make getting parts easier. You can also get exact measurements/dimensions from the AIM.

I did a frame swap on my '66 using a '79 frame, which required lots of mods. I STRONGLY suggest you get the help of an experienced welder. I took "welding 101" by myself, but not always had the best results!!

WOW...bring that puppy back to life, post some pics now!!!

Aren't the 63-67 body mounts, on the frame, in different locations and heights? I know that the rear bumper mount is also a different shape than the 68-73. Lou.

As soon as I get my camera fixed I will post some pictures .It's pretty bad shape but is a true L88 .I just tack weld it then I have a 68 year old LADY come weld it up ,she welds for Toyota factory here
