It's not a lock, it's an electrical switch that's turned on and off with the key and is, as said earlier, for the alarm. Did you get an owner's manual with the car? If not, they are available very reasonably from all the vendors. There are other switches and vacuum components that it would be good to know should you need them.
73 and earlier it is on the center of the rear panel between the tail lights. When they went with the rubber rear bumper in 74 they moved the key to the drivers front fender.

I learn something new everyday! Thanks! BTW, is the horn in the same place on the '73 and earlier cars? Or is it still inside the rear driver's fender?
Yes, it is a primitive alarm system. Mine still works.
Primitive is an understatement. Glad that it still works.....but I know I would never use it if it were on my car....especially if I knew I was going to be away from the car with the alarm set. Becasue you can come back to a Corvette with a DEAD battery.

True. There is no timer. It beeps until the battery goes dead. Mine works as I said but is never armed. I never leave my car unattended. In my security-secure garage the battery is disconnected. It is a nice option for those who park on a street. But it is very primitive as I said with no ignition immobilizer. I guess it was OK 40 years ago!
At least GM had the right idea. No A+ on the way they did it but it was a good start on security. I just pushed the button on the remote for my Cruze. The car is completely immobilized. Things have come a long way!
My car being a '72 vert don't even have door locks anymore, why bother?? but MY car I can leave the keys in and they can't drive it away.....and all the computer wiring is purposely not stock color codes....and the key to allow the car/engine to fire.....???
a garage door opener under the dash, so to be activated with key on, and not until........then the computer/FI pump takes off......
Can you power that alarm to a separate much smaller 12 volt battery?
Put in a number of remote locations in the car.
Honestly...in my opinion...not worth the time. The alarm system is no good if a person is REALLY concerned about trying to stall a possible theft.....and even if you installed another 12 volt battery...all this factory alarm system does is make noise.
I have a '77 with the alarm switch on the fender. And you don't know how many shows I been to and guys walk up and ask what is that. I tell them what it is and take out the key and them how it works. The look on there faces and they ask, what the car had no remotes...
