76 Exhaust question

My uncle has a 76 L-48 and the car is 100% stock. He is looking to add sound to the exhaust. Can he just replace the mufflers with flowmasters and then have it welded to the stock pipes?
He doesn't care to replace the whole exhaust if he doesn't have to.
Appreciate all insight, thanks.

Before you go an weld the mufflers on...crank it with NO mufflers....then set the new mufflers up to the original 'Y' pipe and crank it and listen and see if that sound pleases everyone.
The PROBLEM can be...for some people...when the engine is idling at a specific RPM...OR cruising at a specific RPM...the tone coming out of the exhaust can be disturbing to the inner ear and make the car sound obnoxious. I have dealt with this issue a lot also.

The dual exhaust I put in my '77 would resonate at around 1700 RPM (normal around town cruising speed). Surprisingly when I advanced the base timing from 8 BTDC to 14 BTDC the resonance is almost completely gone.
