Hi, does anyone know how to remove the power steering pump from a C3 1979 corvette? I have a leak on it and I need to seal it with one of the kits. But to do so I have to first remove it from the serpentine belt (shown as A in picture). This serpentine is very very tight and have no clue how this is done. Do I need a special tool too?
Thank you
david.
Hi David , I have a 73 and think maybe they both mount the same way. the pump sits in a bracket/cradle that is mounted to the front of the engine, you must remove the bolt holding the pump to the cradle from reaching down from the hood area. Then there is a pivot nut that must be loosened from underneath the car, once these are removed the pump can be swung in toward the engine enough to relieve tension on the belt so it and the pump can be removed , the pump swings back and forth in the cradle for belt tensioning. If your car is like mine and the alternator sits above the power steering pump then it is much easier to remove the alternator belt and alternator which will give easier access to the p/s pump. This is not a hard job, hope this helps.
I have a 78, my advice is:
Disconnect battery.
Remove alternator.
Now you can see the Ps pump and on the rear is the slotted adjusting bracket. Back off on the hex nut and you will have to back off the lower bolt that is the pivot point. You should be able to see how to unbolt the hoses and pump.
You need an assembly manual. It would show how its mounted.
Hi mikep3, since you have a C3 78, I thought maybe you might also know this. The dome light underneath the T-top is it supposed to light up when you open the door? I just replaced mine because it was missing in the car I got but doesn't seem to work. Any suggestion?
Thank you
