All connections are in ... (I temporarily disconnected the tach cable) The panel will simply not slip into place...
What needs to happen in order to get clearance for the panel to interface with the fastener connections on the dash, etc.
Does the dash harness go above the steering wheel?
If I try to force things my light bulb retainers pop out. (It's a living hell)
I'm attaching a photo of my mess... not sure if you can make anything out of it.
I think what I am looking for is for someone who has experience to tell me how you dress the wires/harness prior to installing the panel.
DUB... My apologies .. I didn't pull the steering column.. I was in the process but after I disconnected the rag joint the column dropped low enough to where making the bezel connections was pretty simple.
...Does the dash harness go above the steering wheel?...
Yes, above the steering column. The main dash harness usually routes along the tops of the speedo and tach, but could vary depending on model year. Check the 69 AIM for specifics.

"Sometime in 1970 they changed the way the main wire harness routes around the main instrument cluster. On 68, 69 and 1970 early? the main wire harness comes out of the fuse box, along the top of the dash, down under the tachometer and speedometer, then over to the center cluster. When they installed the steering column, it pushed the harness in-between the tach and speedo, kind of in a "W" fashion".
Might that help you?

Alan
I would gladly send you the 71 AIM page I have but it shows the harness running above the speedo and tach.
Thanks Kid Vette... I appreciate you sending this..Looks like they got smart... It's tight quarters behind the panel so that gives a little relief by routing the harness above the bezels.
Here's another view - 69 convertible, Nov 68 build. Make sure that the speedo and tach cables are positioned above the rod braces, if you have them. The main harness goes above the column. The last connections I make are those two drive cables. You should then be able to massage the lower dash into position.

OH!! Thanks... That is a useful piece of information .. I'll try that.
Thank you very much for sending that information and photo.
Did you route your dash harness above the instrument bezels? .. or below?

it was an absolute BIT@H getting that console back in. I think it took me 10 tries.
I feel your pain.
The harness goes over the top. The little peanut bulbs pop out of the socket and fall in the lens housing.
Someone after the fact told me to switch to the newer 2-wire style connectors and forget using the old style for this reason alone. Next time I pull it apart I am doing just that...the will never pop out again.

Sorry about the thread highjack but your photo shows a black wire that I found severed while doing my recent radio install. It is the black wire in the photo that is passing above the parking brake cable routed just below the green and white wires. I recently had a problem with my key warning buzzer operating with the door closed and key not in the ignition. I had to pull the wire at the horn relay to stop the buzzing. Is this broken wire the culprit?

If it exits out of the dash harness ...I'm thinking it could be the ground cable for the speedo console...

I happened to notice that also from one of the wiring diagrams on this thread. The wire is definitely coming from that direction. I'll have to get under the dash for a better view.
Hi T69,
The black wire you asked about is a ground wire.
It's shown in the AIM page sully posted… it's at the extreme right border, about 1/3rd of the way up the page.
It mounts to the birdcage hinge pillar using a hex head screw.

Alan
After reading these posts I am REALLY not looking forward to installing my new speedo and tach. I have had the center and right dash off several times and was planning on just lowering the steering column on my 68 to do the installation. Now I think I may need to keep the bottle of Jack Daniels close at hand during the installation.
