I'm trying to remove the mph tach gauges in my 82 so i can change the bulb sockets since my hand won't fit back there to do so. When I remove it as one piece when I tilt it either way it gets jammed cause the steering column is in the way. How in the world do I remove it as one piece?!
Loosen the bracket that holds the column. It's under the dash, you will most likely have to remove the lower cover. This is the cover which has the by-pass for the head lights. You won't do any harm. This will give you enough play to allow the cluster to come out. Also use some fine emery cloth/paper to clean the contacts in the sockets, I had to do the same thing when I got my 78. My dash lights have been fine for almost 10 years. Good luck

You will also have to loosen the two nuts ( 1/2' socket) at the base of the steering column and the firewall so the column will actually move. Just removing the 2 bolts under the column will more than likely NOT provide enough room to pull out the cluster.
ALSO....you better take a careful look from under the steering column BECAUSE ether can be 2 screws that secure the dash panel to the underside of this cluster.
Great post! The other pins on that calibration IC (chip) control the other analog gauges. If you have similar high/low readings on the other temp guages, etc. then you might want to consider buying a replacement IC from batte.com (I have no affiliation, just when I found this post I found their video and read up on their offering). I just measured my RPM with the Innovate to read my AFR and thought the Innovate was wrong until I compared it to the HVAC reading when in diagnostic mode. Turns out my HVAC and Innovate agree, and my tachomoter was wrong (and good news my idle isn't high like I thought it was). Rather than just fix my tach reading, I'll spend the extra money and fix the other gauges as well. They're using accurate 0.1% surface mount resistors which are accurate and won't fade over time.
