I am kind of glad about mine because I can’t taken apart my inner cap yet, but I will label to make sure each one is back correctly.

Thanks

I think is the right thread to post my question. I also restore a set of P02 caps and I‘m not sure about the paint from the inner pot metal piece.

Which part of this was painted?

Mine look like painted on the side between the struts and on the outer part on the front, and also a lack of overspray on the back.

The second question, the right color is a semi gloss black? It‘s look likes a semi glossy black under the screw (pic)

The NCRS book is not very detailed on this part.

Until someone more knowledgeable comes along couple of thoughts.

The paint appears to be flat black but I used semi gloss to give them a little bit of a brighter appearance to them. The sides and the tops are painted as you deduced.

A couple of tips one, which might be too late, They are made and balanced to each other so if possible keep the set together and mark the position of each piece to the other. They are balanced much like a wheels are with small little weights. The other thought is once you’re all done I sprayed them with a clear semi gloss overcoat. I thought that that would keep them looking great way longer than without it. They are not easy to clean up and I’d rather not have to do it again for the longest possible time.

Good luck Ike

Hi Ike

It was not to late! I take some pictures bevor I disabled the wheel covers. I was able to assign the pieces again. I had really luck

Thanks for your tips and information.

When I look around the screw hole, It's look to me more glossy then a flat black. It's that possible? More like a semi glossy or satin black?

And the upper part of the wheel cover hat only painted against the outside (side of the struts to middle and the ring on the underside)?

I’m glad you were able to piece them together. I had to make a little balancing machine to lineup mine after not knowing that they were matched and weighted Hopefully I got them back correctly.

Hard to say if it’s just poor faded paint or where they originally flat black. Somewhat hard to believe so that’s why I went with semi gloss. Your paint scream scheme is correct as far as I am aware of.

A lot of masking to get it right. I wonder how GM painted these? I often wonder how a part that’s mass-produced and has complicated paint scheme gets done quickly.

Good luck Ike

Good question how GM paint these wheel covers The factory paint don't look like a big job of masking. Maybe someone knows and also knows more about the black color glossy degree?

I restored a set, I thought that they appeared to be a flat finish. So I used SEMS Hot Rod black which is a satin finish. And was told by someone, who claimed that he’s seen many NOS PO2, and all where semigloss finish. To add confusion production parts can differ from NOS parts.

I can confirm the statement, I have meanwhile looked at various NOS P02 on Ebay, these all look more like semi-gloss.

Yes, it's not a corvette hub cap, but I think they are made all the same finish.

I have also made a few tests with black color. I compared this with the Nos photos, the photos here from the forum and the repro hub caps, as well as with the faded color of the covers, which is partly not well preserved in places.

The conclusion: I think the repro hub cap black is too flat in the outer ring. I prefer the semi-flat in the middle, they look like the color that a lot of forum member use, it's a little bit more shiny and have more deepness than the repro hub cap black.

But the big question is about the nos caps, which looks a lot more shiny to a semi-gloss.
