Default Tips for underbody prep

About to start in prepping underside of body for paint/coating. How did you clean it up? Also what coating did you use? Any suggestions are welcome!

Hope this helps. I have a lift and I steam cleaned the underside. Got rid of all the grese, oil dirt and whatever. Then I used a whire wheel on the frame and painted it with rust encapsulator and black chassi paint. I did not paint any of the fiberglass.

I have some pictures but they are not with me. If you would like to see, just ask.

Is it a bad idea to paint the fiberglass?

I think members who want their cars to look original as possible do not paint any fiberglass that came from the factory unpainted.

Oh ok. Mines not going to be anywhere in the realm of original.

What model year? You may be looking at factory applied undercoating and sound deadener.

Is your car a pre-1975 model, or a '75-'82 model. Pre '75s have a fiberglass floor pan, post '75s have a steel floor pan, to deal with the added heat from the catalytic converter.

If originality isn't an issue, I'd consider truck bed liner material, to deaden the sound a little.....

I found this stuff to work great to really clean up the gunk underneath the car- The professional stuff in the metal can NOT the plastic bottle. Need some good rubber gloves and air movement. Less than $20/gal

Got the fiberglass really clean....

Put Zero Clearance exterior heat shield- to help stop the heat...

On the back- did a faux carbonfiber finish-

Used a paint remover wheel fro Harbor freight-

Rattle canned it w/ Rustoleum-

Here' the final look

That's very likely to be factory applied undercoating. You'll also find it under the carpeting. The AIM has three or four pages dealing with how they wanted the stuff applied at the factory. Why not leave it alone?

I suppose I could. Just wanted to freshen it up while the body is off, make it clean and nice and possibly easier to clean? If its not able to be cleaned and painted then I won't. Just looking for ideas, thanks.

That looks really good. Unfortunately mine has rough undercoating on it, so wouldn't be able to do that (at least don't think so).

If a PO has sprayed some bed-liner material or similar type of undercoating on the car, it will be very difficult to remove. You may just want to use a pressure washer to shoot it clean and leave it as-is.

If it is not bonded well to the fiberglass, the pressure washer might just blow it off. If it is bonded well, I think you're stuck with it.

It can be done. A heat gun and a putty knife for scraping works really well. I just did that to my wheel wells over the weekend. More here...

If you could package that "elbow grease" and sell it, you'd make millions! Lots of work to get your wheelwells looking that good.

Nicely done!!

I buy the big bottles at Sam's Club. I've known that method for many years. I was just looking for something a bit easier.

P.S. After 60, you need to take the Motrin BEFORE you do the work....
