Default Speedo/Tach lights

When I turn on the headlights the signal lights on the dash come on and stay on but the speedo and tach lights do not. The headlights and turn signals work fine it's just the the dash lights that aren't on! The gauge lights are working normal and go on and off like they should. When I turn the headlights off everything is normal. Any ideas what it could be?
Thanks Dennis

Sounds like a bad ground. I had a tail light not grounded correctly. Did the same thing and the brake lights n that side didnt work right. My guess.

You'll need someone to step on your brake pedal for you to check

On my 77 when I got it the left t/s indicator would illuminate when the headlights were turned on. All my lights functioned properly. I wound up replacing my h/l switch.

The tach/speedo gauges have a separate wire for grounding them. It runs from the back side of the housings to the birdcage post in front of the driver's door. Any 14 ga. wire (or larger) run from the rear of the gauge housing to ground will get the job done.

Dennis... .

What year is the car?

If it's a 1978-1982 you may have a PCB issue behind the dash cluster. But without the year it's hard to help you.

The lamps in the center console and the lamps in the speedo housing are on the same circuit which makes me think you might have a failure in the pcb behind the speedo and tach. It's easy enough to check out.

Once you have the housing out of the dash look at the printed circuit and see if any of the fingers are touching one another.
