Hi All, On my 71 I'm not getting a temp read out, could this be the thermostat? Do I have to drain the rad to change it?

I think the temp sensor is either going to be located atop the intake manifold near the radiator hose thermostat housing or between cylinders 1 and 3 at front drivers side engine head.

You might want to look for problems with the wires there.

Should not need to drain anyway.

Someone else can probably answer better than me about what's wrong with it, or gauge.

Hi mpr,
I believe you can check that the thermostat is opening by feeling the heat in the upper and lower radiator hoses after the engine has been running for a while.
The water neck/thermostat is high enough that the radiator doesn't need to be drained to change thermostat.
Have you checked the temperature sender and it's electrical connection for the dash gauge that's located in the side of the left side head between the first 2 plug?
Regards,
Alan

Location of temperature sender for dash gauge.

Thanks guys, I'll check the temp wire.

Didn't find a wire on the electrical connection on the left side after the first cylinder. It was working not sure how something like that could come off.

Hi,
You should see the wire with a woven 'sheath' on it to protect it.

Alan

Hi mpr,
Isn't nice that on occasion a 'fix' is easy!

Alan

Great to hear! I'm (re)learning this stuff myself. Haven't had a 350 SB Chevy since the 1970's.

Really, this is one of those thing where it is much easier to replace the sensor, the thermostat and flush the coolant all at once.

It is cheap, and you fix it once.
