Default New leather seats

I just put new leather seats in my 1979. What's the group opinion on care. Do they need leather conditioner right away? Let them alone? The car is not in the sun a lot, I just want to do things right.

I wouldn't *think* they would need it, but I'd probably do it.
But I like the smell of leather conditioner and it would give me an excuse to be in my vette to press buttons and such... I'm obviously a child so maybe that cancels out my recommendation

I would use a really good brand of leather conditioner right away (before much use) which will put some lanolin [or other similar stuff] into the leather; that will also aid in water/stain-proofing the seats. New leather will stain rather easily. The conditioner should have instructions on how much to use and how often to use it.

And do not under any circumstances use mink oil. Mink oil is for HARD leather like saddles. My wife works for a leather store and constantly hears about people ruining soft leather with mink oil.

Exactly. Do some research on the web to help choose the right "type" of leather conditioner, and then the best brand. You might want to call Al Knoch [interiors] to find out what they recommend. I would have suggested other vendors....but I don't have much confidence that many other vendors would care what you do with the seatcovers AFTER you have paid for them.

I have the same felling about after the sale. It appears I was right in thinking I should treat them right away. The opinion is you need to use a PH neutral treatment. The one brand name that keeps surfacing is Lexol which PH neutral. Thanks to all for your help

I have used Lexol products on my leather seats for years. Lexol makes both a cleaner and a conditioner. The conditioner works great and will not leave a greasy film nor darken light colored seats.

Worked great the new seats seemed thirsty, left a nice patina. That was my project for today detailing the interior.
