My new to me 74 sat in a barn unused for two years. I have the engine running real smooth and drove it to work today, 30 miles round trip. Everything worked great except two things I can't figure out.
1. The hand brake indicator light stays on except for when it is blinking with the right turn signal
2. After my drive home, the car kept grinding when I tried to put it in reverse to back into the garage, which didn't happen last night.
I do know that everything in the car is original and numbers matching. Any thoughts on these two things would be great as the only other car I've ever wrenched on was my 91' Z28 that I had once upon a time.

The hand brake could be a short or a bad ground. Could be some critters got in there and made a nest and ate some wires.
Can you put it in reverse, then start it and see if it will reverse. That could be synchros if it still functions. Also could be low on gear oil as well. You may need to jack it up and check your levels.
Do you have an AIM for you model year yet. It will help with part location

I haven't jacked it up yet but planned to check the gear oil this afternoon. It does reverse when I shut the car off and then restart it though. Thanks for the help.
Assembly instruction manual. Maybe the clutch needs to be adjusted also, to get it into reverse
I do have a Haynes manual so I could reference that. I just figured I would post one here and ask because I have seen so many excellent responses. Thanks for the help!
...I do have a Haynes manual so I could reference that...
Reference. Yes. Rely upon. No. The Chilton's and Haynes can be handy, but they are C3 generic. Model year specific reference material is always a better choice.
All good advice above.
But here's the deal......
Be glad that brake lite lights at all.....
And second.....Before you try reverse, Put it in first---then put it in reverse.
What happens when you do first gear is, it stops everything from rotating in the trans. So now reverse will just slip in.
Oh......and if it's an automatic.-I have some really bad news for you....

It is a manual. I checked the gear fluid today and it is good, so next time I drive it I will try that and see. Thanks for the tip!

Never heard or tried this before. I will have to remember this when the cover comes off. I only get a quick grind as I am going into reverse if I don't have the clutch pedal all the way down. Seems I have to go a couple inches further down on the pedal than any of the forward gears.
64roadster is correct, I had had to do this a couple of times when my Muncie would not go into reverse. Read about it on this, the best Corvette forum. Lou.
