Default In over my head?

73 coupe with auto trans... Total restoration of interior... when installing new shift console and "A/C Heater Control Assembly" do I connect the control assembly first, then attach the assembly to the console cover? Attaching the vent cable and vacuum assembly, doesn't seem possible, once the control assembly is attached to the console cover???

Not the best pic, but the HVAC control retainer is lying on the shifter in this pic. This one happens to be nonAC because it has the Vent levers in it. AC cars used the same retainer without the vent levers

The HVAC controls themselves do not mount to the console trim plate.

Hi BE,
The controller is mounted to the frame under the shift plate by screws.
The frame lays in the shifter console loose until the shift console plate is installed which holds it in place.
It helps to have 3 hands to accomplish this on a car with kick panel vents… on a/c cars it's a bit easier.
Good luck.
Regards,
Alan

You can see the 2 flat head screws (one upper right, one lower left) for mounting the controller and the opening in the upper left corner of the frame for one of the shifter plate mounting screws.
THE SCREWS (maybe 3) TO MOUNT THE AC CONTROLLER ARE IN A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT LOCATION BUT THE PRINCIPLE IS THE SAME!

Hi BE,
Here's a picture of a 71 controller.
It's mounted to a framework.
That's what made me think it would be true for your car too since I believe the console is about the same.
Regards,
Alan

This picture also shows the location of the #9 hose, blue stripe, de-fog function.
