Just to let you know...for any future issues.....there is a section on the forum for 'paint/body' issues.....which this falls under.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/paint-body-138/

96 views and no replies is why no replies were given. This is and can be a touchy issue due to it being a part of the structure of the body.

And to answer you question. Replacing the floor fans that WERE STEEL with fiberglass/SMC ones from an earlier year would NOT be something that I would do.

They offer steel floor pans that can be installed...and that is what I would do for you if your car were in my shop.

NOW...you can do as you wish...and I am NOT writing that it can not be done. But there are some things that come into 'play' that may cause this idea not to work....and those 'things'...I can not see....but bad rusty steel is one of them...and that also depends on how much of the floor pan you plan on using when you take it out of your donor car.

Thanks for the come back DUB
what I have at this point is a 75 with great floor pans but are old stile glass and the good body is a 76 and the foot well as I can see at this point is all rusted from being on or close to the ground for 15 years were seats are seams to be good and solid but haven't pulled them as of yet so if the rust go's further than what I can see at this point then I plan on replacing hole pan but if just wear the feet well are then I was thinking of the glass ones like the earlier ones are just wondering if any one has tried it

In that case, you need to do a thorough inspection of the ENTIRE birdcage before deciding to fix the pans and use the 76 all together.

the Bird cage is fine this is not my first corvette that I have done but it is my first with the medal floor pans all the other vets were late c 2 and early c 3 . and only reason I asked if any one has used fiberglass replacement is cause I do have a doner car witch is an early 75 and it is fiberglass floor pans from what I have seen from under the car and from under rugs is it is just were your feet rest that is gone at this time and that is what I thinking of replacing if it will fit and work . weather is not the best last few days hear so haven't got round to taking seats & rug out to make sure what is under the seats is like from under and seats seam good and solid but will find out this week for sure .again just asking if any one has done that I seen were some have just patched same with scrap medal and then sealing it off with resen

IF you patch or replace the rusted areas with steel....DO NOT seal it with resin....the resin WILL NOT bond to the steel for very long....and it can and will more than likely pop off or loose its bond...and rust can start all over again. There are products that can seal off the patch panels you install if that is what you wan to do.

One again...you can fix this problem how ever you choose. And if 50 people come and tell you they took the steel floor pans out and installed fiberglass floor pans....all I would say to that is that those 50 people did SPENT a lot more time and effort to get that 'idea' to work then buying what they needed and replace the steel floor pans.

As I wrote...your car...do it your way. I do not judge what you do.

I have no clue on what you know...or how many Corvettes you have done. So me giving a response that offends you....I am not to blame because I do not know if you know everything or nothing at all. I am giving an opinion from my decades of experience. And when questions are asked that deal with structure....how am I supposed to respond to the question??? Because.... If the person had years of experience...they would not post a question they should already know.

Thus... you should already KNOW the answer to the question about floor pans.....CORRECT????

I respond to questions NOT ONLY for the person who is asking...but also for those people who do not know and are searching for an opinion on the same question they may have and come across this thread.

I am responding from a professional point of view. I do this type of work every day. So I am not going to write something that pleases people when I know it is incorrect. I know what you need to do to fix this...or at least if it were in my shop how I would fix this....so.....I guess we will see if anyone 'chimes' in with the answer that satisfies you.

Im with dub. He may come off as strong opinioned, but he gave me advice when I installed my metal pans in my 77. Dub is one of the guys on this forum that most people take heed to what he says. It wasn't that hard to install the pans, but I'm a welder.
