I recently put my 68 convertible up on jack stands to begin a restoration project. My garage floor is level and the jack stands are the same size and placement matches from side to side. When I took the hood off, because of alignment issues I noticed the passenger side fender was pushed up about an inch higher than the drivers side. All the bolts are in place for the supports under the hood hinges on both sides, and the headlight frame is broke on the passenger side. Has anyone run across a similar situation? The rest of the hood seems to line up well just this one high spot. I also noticed, but haven't had a chance to investigate fully, that there is the same inch difference at the wheel wells to the floor, and the radiator does not sit level. Could this be a bent frame? What is the best way to check it out? I plan on pulling the engine and possibly the front clip.
It is highly suggested that you line up panels of the car when the car is sitting on its wheels...especially, if the car is 30+ years old. The frame flexes, as do body panels, when they are not 'loaded' as the car will be when ready to drive it.
In cases where frame/birdcage members are heavily rusted, further bending and/or damage can occur.
This is not an indication that you already have something 'wrong'. It is merely information to assess relative to what your car is doing.
