clock runs backward
Guys got a 70 454 and sometimes the clock runs backwards and when it does the volt hand shows discharge but i checked the voltage with a meter and it is charging even though it say negetive charge.
What would you guys say makes my clock run backwards and the gauge discharge,,dont do it all the time just sometimes.Im thinking a ground somewere!

Exorcism needed!
Could be you have been to the graveyard one time too many.
The clock is mechanical. When the clock ticks down the points close for a split second and springs take over until it ticks down again.
Check the battery voltage with the engine off and on and check the voltage at the alternator at idle and at 2000 RPM and post the results.

I replaced mine with a crystal one from stock. It would run backward after the battery was connected sometimes. What fixed it was disconnecting the battery and reconnecting repeatedly, takes a few times until one time it comes on going the right way. Then stays right until battery is disconnected again.

No way for the ammeter to operate in reverse...SOMETIMES...

I don't know if this will help at all, but when I reconnect the battery on my 70 454, the clock will run backward for a second or two before going clockwise.
It seems to me that somehow -12V is going to the clock instead of +12V

You'll never be late!
Mine stopped at 7:37 so its right twice a day.
Sounds kinda crazy running backwards but hey these cars have
a mind of their own sometimes.

That is an awesome clock. I wouldn't fix it......
Every time I sit in our stingray I go back in time to the 70's.
(the 70's sucked however). But it's my way back machine.
Now if I can just connect with mr. peabody and sherman.........

It is typical for the reproduction quartz clocks and quartz conversion kits to run backwards for a few seconds when they are started up.

Cue the movie song, "Back in Time"...
Ernie: Ever see an ammeter read 'backwards'....occasionally??

Only when the flux capacitor is clogged... and the brillium crystals are hot.... lol..
I will say the if the ammeter is discharging, the clock issue is not related to that problem. If the clock is quartz its possible he has a short or a loose connection and that might explain why the clock keeps running backwards... It's easy to tell if he has a quarts by watching the second hand... quarts sweeps... and original borg movements sweep.

My tech page has a free wiring tracer diagram for you too.. copy this picture and paste it into your paint program. Once saved you can then trace a circuit with ease.
