Default Adjusting the front grilles

I want to close up the gap on the front grille surrounds but having been under the car and loosened the retaining brackets, there was no adjustment. Do they have to be drilled to close them up or have I missed something ?

I'm thinking that the egg crate stays put and the 'L' piece moves over at the bottom to meet it ?

Hi Stuart,
Good to talk to you.
That gap is controlled by the position of the bumper-ette AND the position of the grill.
I'd loosen the bolt at the top of the bumper-ette and the one at the bottom along with the 2 bolts that the bracket for that the lower bolt goes through.
Then loosen the screws around the perimeter of the grill along with the screws near the bumper-ette that are in the egg crate portion of the grill. The screws around the perimeter of the grill are set in c-clips that are in slots in the fiberglass so have a bit of adjustment.
You then will know how much if any movement you have in the 2 pieces.
On a car that hasn't been hit you should be able to obtain a pretty nice fit and gap… if the front has been hit how good a gap you can achieve will likely depend on how well the repair was done.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Lower bumper bolt.

Egg crate screw.

Egg crate screw.
Thanks Alan.

I have loosened that L shaped bracket on all three bolts and there was no movement at all. The egg crates look to me to be in the correct position so I haven't tried moving those. Should the two L shaped trims lean outward slightly at the bottom or be straight up & down ?

I believe it's never been hit but it was taken apart for a body on resto.

Hi S,
Did you loosen the bolt at the top of the bumperette?
I would describe the bumperettes as quite vertical, not tipped.
Because I can get far in front of the car to take a picture the photo may be a bit distorted.
In the pictures you can see the 'slot's for the grill screws in the fiberglass and I've also added a picture oaf the bracket for each grill that needs to be loosened for the grills to move.
Regards,
Alan

Hello Stuart,
One thing to check here before you get in too deep is the chrome hockey stick alignment to the line I drew on Alan's photo (hope you don't mind Alan) . The end of the stick should come to the line or just beyond it.

The hockey stick mounts to the fender on the lateral side and the front valence on the bottom side. If the front valence is a little wider than it should be, the the stick won't make the line, and there will always be a gap. This can happen if there has been work done on the valence in the past

Hi bellaireroad.

That's my exact problem. It looks like it should move over with just the three bolts Alan's pictures show but I've tried that and didn't get any movement so I'll dig into it some more.

Cheers,

Stuart
