I have a 72 coupe im installing new carpet in. after I finish the back part should I put the center consoul and e- brake cover back on then put the new carpet in the front. I thought I might be able to tuck the carpet underneath them. just looking for the easiest way to do this.. thanks for any info.
My advice is to fit and install the fronts, then add console and ebrake. Fronts may need to be trimmed to get a good fit on the consoles.
Best not to have anything in the way as you fit your carpet, you may need to reference where the console ends, but when i installed mine over the winter i had it as open as possible to get the best fit.
Hi sk,
I found it best to have both the parking brake console and shifter console in place and loosely fastened.
Having them in place gives you a guide as to how much carpet needs to be trimmed where it slips up under the consoles.
I found that about 1 1/2" seemed about right. If too much carpet is left in place it causes the consoles to 'spread' and makes aligning and fitting them well very difficult.
Regards,
Alan
Getting ready for the cut…. carefully locating the carpet.
The cut follows the bottom of the consoles… you can see how much extends up under the console side.

I already had my console out when I did mine. I just put it in put the console over it to get an idea where not to cut it. Then cut and fit placing and removing the console. Worked out great. I bought the carpet plugs that hold it in at Ace hardware. Lowes probably has them too. Cheaper than ordering online with the shipping. Measure twice, cut your finger once as they say....
And you can use an old soldering iron for melting the seatbelt and seat holes. I think thats Dubs method.
Good luck
