Default Obsessive, over enginered air filter

I disconnected and removed the cowl induction flapper for my '82. I simply can not get it working. But, now I have the benefit of a modified ram air!

I'm worried about extra dirt getting forced into my air cleaner full time, not just when I punch it (that is if it worked). The 82 TPI has an opening on the top of the air cleaner that allows cowl air forced in when functional.

I'm considering a simple solution of putting some home HVAC air conditioning nylon type filtering material over the opening on the top of the twin air filters. It look good, not bubba and will potentially provide a good, extra layer of filtration prior to the regular paper filter.

My question is will the engine heat melt/mess up or otherwise compromise the nylon air filter? If so, I'll just deal with it- I don't want to create a problem.

No issue or am I over thinking it?

Thanks!

OVER THINKING IT...in my opinion. I seriously doubt that the amount of debris would be that excessive. And if you raise your hood and do weekly inspections if driven that much....removing your air cleaner and cleaning it is not that big of a deal.

Because it 'sounds' like you were wanting to FILTER the air to your FILTERS.

And as for getting the solenoid to function. If it works when you do a test with it disconnected and supply 12 volts and a ground to it. AND if you are willing to do a little bit of fabrication. You can make this flapper function at WHATEVER throttle angle you choose to have it open and NOT have to deal with the factory way of getting it to open.

Just 'saying'...it can be done and is rather simple...at least in my eyes it is simple....in comparison to some of the custom electrical set-up's and modifications I perform.

Thanks DUB, you are correct; I'm over thinking the double filter. I check under the hood several times a week, so I'm good.

I may mess with the actuator a bit later.... I've got a wonky fuel gauge that I need to tackle next.
