Okay, okay before you all go off on me I KNOW it is cheese ball. I'm just looking for something passable until I can save enough to get a proper paint job.
I was being stupid and tapped the back of another car while inching forward in bumper to pumper traffic. No damage to her car but my '82 got enough to warrant some glass and paint work.
I did a decent job on the glass repair (actually pretty good) and decided to do a "rattle can" paint job to get me through a couple of months.
I put several coats on and am letting it settle. My plan it to do a wet sand and then a light buff and wax. Again, something passable to get me through the summer.
I need some advice on how best to make out of a bad situation with the rattle can. How long to I wait before buffing, what grit to use, how best to buff and blend....etc
Some people have made spray bomb paint jobs that won shows, lots of wet sanding and buffing many layers
Not so much in my case 20 years ago I did black on a vw trikes fiberglass body I wanted it all nice for bike week, the sun just faded it really badly really quickly, the look was cool if you dig mad max movies....
I'm no expert. I actually just painted my first car. What I learned along the way is three base coats then three clear. No wet sanding on the base coat unless there are bad imperfections. Clear coat is your friend. I put four coats of clear on (duplicolor - which I understand is kind of thin anyway). I have a few areas that still look dry. I didn't slow the gun down enough to let the clear really "flow" because I was afraid of runs. I'm contemplating another coat of clear now before wet sanding as to not run the risk of burning through into the base (I have some orange peel). Otherwise, will wet sand 1500 then 2000 then compound, polish and seal. But I'm pretty happy with my 600 dollar paint job done in my garage. I couldn't see dropping 10K on paint. Don't rule out totally painting the car yourself.
