Default Steering Wheel - 1976

I didn't want to hijack the other steering wheel thread, so I wanted to post a quick question.

I keep seeing that the 1976 steering wheel was a "single year wheel". (Or steering wheels indicating that they are for use for 68-75 and 75-82 (excluding 1976). It's been so long since we've owned the 68 and 73, so I had a few questions:

1. What is the actual difference? (The Hub, the number of fasteners ? )

2. What are other "76 people" using?

My car has that kind of "silly" looking "Chevy Vega Type" of steering wheel (which looks the same as some 77 and later cars that I've seen).

I like the older 3-spoke style OEM wheel, but I'm not opposed to another aftermarket wheel or even a wheel from another older car.

Any ideas?

Here is the kit you need, then buy the steering wheel for a 77-82.

Thanks. I ran across something like that online while looking at steering wheels. Good to know. I didn't realize the 76 column was a single year item.

The 1976 column is the same as the 68-75, it's just the hub etc. that is different in 1976.

I like that 76-only wheel, for what it's worth. I just sold a 76, and I also have a 70, and I honestly found the feel of the 76 wheel much better.

I kind of go both ways. Sometimes I don't really mind the wheel, and sometimes I look at it and think it looks "odd". It not on the "short list" for an upgrade, but it may be in the works. Maybe a new leather wrap may "wake it up a bit"...

Not quite. The four spoke "sport" steering wheel was used on all 76s. It was also used on 77 and 78 cars without optional tilt/tele. With tilt/tele, 77-78 got the three spoke leather wrapped steering wheel.

This post may also give you a good general idea as to what parts will need to be replaced.

That's why the "single year wheel" description I saw struck me as odd. I knew I saw the wheel on later year cars as well. I did actually run across a few other descriptions online last night that mention exactly when you did about the same wheel being used on the "non-tilt/tele columns in 77-78. At least I know for sure now.
