Default Door Striker Replacement -Easy Right?

So I need to replace the Driver's side Door striker post on my 1969 convertible. I'll save you the details however I ordered the new part and went to install it and had to stop. I believe the there is a nut hidden inside the door jamb that will fall to the abyss, never to be seen again. What appeared to be a 2 minute job is looking more difficult than I expected. Any ideas on how I can keep the backing nut in place or how to get at it so I can replace the post?

Thank you for your help.

The nut for the lock post is spot welded to the door jamb post. It's possible the spot welds could break loose with age, but they've been removed and reinstalled on my 68 without any problems.

Hi D,
Spot welded to the post?
The nut is housed in a 'cage' on the lock pillar. The nut must be free to move so the striker position can be adjusted.
Access to the rear side of the striker and it's nut is through the small panel in the rear wheel well.
Regards,
Alan
