I have a 1980 Corvette with a 5.7 litre engine. When I am standing in traffic with my foot on the brake and the car in Neutral it runs fine. However when I place the car in drive and put my foot on the brake it shuts the engine off after a few minutes.
Can anyone tell me what the probable causes could be and how to fix it?
The car got a tune up last week. I drive about 50 mph. When I am standing at the stoplight I leave it in Drive but the car shuts off so I need to put it in Neutral. When I do this it the motor keeps running.

You say it shuts off after a few minutes when in drive and foot on brake so are you saying it does run for a while before stalling? Or does it stall as soon as you get to idle in drive? Does the car have AC? Maybe the fast idle solenoid that is supposed to speed up idle when the AC starts isn't working? When you're in neutral does the idle speed change as the AC kicks in and out?

Why arent you taking the car back to the person who tuned it?
When I have it in Drive and standing at a stop light with my foot on the brake it works fine for a short while, then it starts to splutter before the engine dying on me.

Does the engine "Shut off" like you turn the key off or does it run a bit bajigadity then stall out?
My guess is that a combo of adjusting the idle speed, rich/lean or a bump in the timing could do a lot for your idle.
Your trans in drive at a stop will drag 150rpms easily out of the engine.
