Default What is it?

So I was under the car trying to replace the standard 4 speed transmission fluid and noticed this above the actual transmission. It is not hooked up to anything. About the only thing that does not work on my car are the reverse indicator lights and the parking break mechanism. Any idea what this cable goes to? Any idea what this is ?

if you mean the cable with the eyelet at the end, it appears to be the cable that links the transmission to the steering column to lock the transmission in reverse when the key is turned to the off position.

And won't let you turn the key to the lock position and take the key out unless it's in reverse.

I'll be replacing the reverse lockout cable on my '71 this week. Here is a photo of the transmission end of the cable. The other end is at the steering shaft below the master brake cylinder.

Thank you! You guys are the best! I will try to get it put back together correct. Just to be clear. When I turn the ignition key to remove it, this cable engauges the transmission into revers so the car does not move? Correct?

I always park the car with it in gear however I have not been selecting reverse. Most of the time I grab second gear, just out of habit.

Again, thank you for the help and info!

Not quite; With the cable connected the shifter must be in reverse in order for the steering column lock to allow removal of the key (key won't rotate into the lock position) This also locks the steering wheel.

It also looks like your cable might be bent down or kinked which would be why it was disconnected in the first place as it would prevent removal of the key. Make sure there is free travel before you connect it back up.

Hi,
The picture of the cable on the transmission that 71/454 posted in #4 is missing the forward clamp for the cable.
It's necessary to help stabilize the casing while the cable itself is being cycled by the lever on the steering column.
It's good to have it in place.
Regards,
Alan

This is the connection at the transmission reverse lever.

The 'forward' bracket location.

The bracket.

Thanks for the pictures Alan, the one I posted was the best one I could find that gave me an idea what I needed to do to replace the cable. I'll be replacing the cable this week along with a few other projects. I'm getting too old to be under the old Vette, hopefully I won't have to crawl under it too much longer.
It was no problem when I removed and re-installed the transmission 40 years ago by myself.
