I'm trying to better familiarize myself with the LS5.
So 70>71 didn't have smog pumps, 72 did?
What determines which LS5s have chrome vs painted valve covers?

Ok, I believe I've figured it out by going over the photos in this thread and by what I can remember about the 71 365HP I owned years ago.

1970-390hp = chrome V/Cs; no smog
1971-365hp = painted V/C; no smog
1972-270hp = painted V/C; has smog

That's right Kevin. But some early 71's had chrome Valve Covers. If you look on the other 70-72 owner thread there is at least one early 71 with Chrome covers.

'72 LS5 engine bay. If you see anything wrong or out of place, please let me know. I'd like to get this as factory correct as I can.

Default Need some measurements

This thread has the people I need.
I have a 502 installed in my C3. I need to put on an air cleaner and don't know how high I can go with my manifold and carb and still use an original/aftermarket L88 hood. I don't have a hood yet so that is why I am asking.

Can someone lay a straight edge from the lower edge of the fender recess on each side and tell me where the air cleaner gasket ledge is either above or below the stick?

A BBC Performer RPM / Holley will fit with the OEM style drop base under the stock height L-88 hood.
