Default flex plate change

Can the transmission be moved back far enough to change the flexplate without removing the transmission mount cross member? Is it possible to just move the trans. back without removing it completely? Anyone had experiance with this? Thanks

I did it a few months ago. I was chasing a noise that turned out to be a bad alternator bearing. It wasn't too bad.

You don't have to remove the cross member, but you do have to disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle (mark orientation so that you can reinstall it properly) AND you will need to remove the crossmember mounting bolts from the transmission. You may also need to remove periperal equipment mounted to the transmission in order to get it moved rearward enough to do the flex plate swap.

I've swapped transmissions but haven't changed only the frex plate. But, I think it can be done that way.

Thanks that's helpful ,wouldn't have thought about marking the driveshaft. Also wondering if new bolts for the flexplate are required or just reuse the existing

If the 'correct' bolts are in the flexplate, reuse them. But, you might also put a dab of blue Loctite on the threads when you install them.

(The correct bolts are hex-head grade 8 bolts, black oxide coating with an undercut on the underside of the head. That undercut is what helps lock it in place...but added Loctite is even better.)

P.S. Do NOT use regular lockwashers under the bolts.
