I'm in need of replacing my steering column in my 82 vette, I'm probably going to go with either a summit brand or a ididit one, there's a 2 inch difference in length between the two, anyone know the length of the vette column & has anyone ever used either one of these two, summit is 33inches long & ididit is 35inches
Either I have broken pieces or missing pieces in my steering column, was looking for a rebuild kit for mine but I can't find one, I can't get the steering lock gear in place cause I can't compress it down enough, when I used the tool it pulled the telescopic shafts out & now the tilt is making weird noise like it's grinding & it's not a smooth motion, seems like everything took a crap at once
AFAIK, aftermarket C3 columns are tilt-only, and I think all 82s had T&T columns, so I agree with Terry82 that repairing yours would be cheaper.
Aftermarket columns will set you back around a grand, and even if you find a used unit on eBay or CL, they are not cheap and you never really know what you're getting into.
You mentioned that you "can't get the steering lock gear in place cause I can't compress it down enough." I assume you are referring to the steering wheel locking plate. Are you using a set screw to lock the telescope down?
Anyway, I measured the 1979 T&T steering column I rebuilt, and it measures 35 1/4" from the end of the steering shaft to the top edge of the case.

You forget to insert an ALLEN head set screw down into the shaft....so it holds your telescopic shaft and THEN you can compress it and install the C clip and designed.
MAKE SURE you have you horn contact and the lock plate CORRECTLY installed. Many people often times did not pay attention and will flip the LOCK PLATE upside down and that screws EVERYTHING UP.
IF you still can not get it...and WANT TO take it part and lay the parts out and take a photo(s)....and label these parts...I would be willing to tell you what to install in correct sequence.

Thank you so much, I will take you up on that, I won't be messing with it tonight but I will get to it tomorrow & no, I didn't do what you said about the Allen set screw, I'm not actually sure how you mean to do that, I've never messed with a column like this before, one with the telescopic

FWIW...
Allen set screw (most hardware stores carry a wide variety). Match the thread to the star screw from your column.
You remove the star screw and use the set screw to hold the tele in place. Using a set screw gives you the room to properly use the steering column lock ring compressor.
Here's a link to an excellent step-by-step article that I think will help you understand your steering column a lot better.
