Default 1981: CAUTION FAN Decal Location

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of the correct location of the CAUTION FAN decal on the 81? I certainly don't have a show car, but I'm trying to get things as "correct" as I can. I've seen this decal on the shroud itself (which hides most of the decal) and some with it on the intake above the shroud (which has a split towards the nose that when stuck it does not touch anything). Both seem a bit awkward or after thoughts... "hey, we might want to put a sticker on that...someone might stick their hand down there!"

Any shared wisdom would be appreciated as I've not found much that gives any definitive information on the correct location/placement.

I will look at a 1981 I have in my shop and see where it is if it is still stuck and had not blown off. I think I remember seeing it still attached...UNLESS someone has a photo of one they know is correct for you.

I DO BELIEVE that it DOES NOT go on the air duct.

The "Caution Fan" DOES go on top of the air duct, not on the shroud itself.

I have some under hood pictures of my 81, that I took about a week after buying it new, in November 81. I will try to post one tomorrow. The placement of the label was the same on all 80-82 Corvettes.

If you have an Assembly Manual, the placement of the label will be shown in the manual. My 81 Assembly Manual is at work, but I have an 82 AIM at home, and I think pages are similar to the 81. Actually, I'm pretty sure the page in the 82 AIM, was carried over right from the 81 AIM. The page showing the label placement in the 82 AIM, shows an engine with the round 81 style air cleaner, not the oval air cleaner used on the 82 FI engine.

In the 82 AIM, pages 27-44 cover "Label, Plate & Sticker Locations", and the placement of the "Fan Blade Caution Label" is found on page 37, UPC 0B, Sheet 10. Page 37 clearly shows the position of the Caution Fan label on the top of the air duct, and with the arrow facing toward the engine.

Fantastic! Look forward to the pics. I have the AIM but I didn't see anything - it was a quick look.

Edit: Found it on page 40 UPC OB. It appears there are two decals. What is the second that is on the shroud? Thoughts? It says "& L82 and & C60" ...so I'm not sure if that means 81 AND L82/C60 or if it just means that this page also includes the schedule for the L82/C60 also?

Well.... knowing that the 1981 did not come with a L82...and C60 is air conditioning option for earlier years. The 1981 did not have an option for A/C because they all came with it.

And the drawing in the assembly manual is from that of a 1979 due to how the rear bumper looks...so it is a guess in my book.

The 2 1981's I have in the shop did not have a the sticker and it has been off for so long that I could not see any witness marks of where it was applied.

I have a feeling that the sticker you have may be the loner one...but do not hold me to that. I swear it goes on the shroud.

I will look in my assembly manual for a 1981 and see if it matches with what you posted.

It goes on top of the Air Intake like it shows in the middle picture of post #1 above.

I am glad I did not place a bet on where I thought it went. I would have obviously lost.

It's a picture of a picture, so the quality isn't great, but I took the original about two weeks after buying my 81, in November 81. After 44,000 miles, the original caution label is still in the same spot, on the air duct.

I looked at my 81 AIM, and it has the same illustration as your AIM. Apparently, no one bothered updating the 81 AIM, to remove the reference to the L-82. The L-82's had a "trap door" shroud, with a small door that opened in the bottom of the shroud, under certain conditions. L-82's had two small yellow labels, warning about the trap door, that exposed the fan from the bottom, when the trap door was opened. One of the labels was placed on the top of the shroud, in front of the air duct, and the second was on the bottom, of the shroud, next to the trap door.
