Default Side Pipes

Ready to order side pipes for my '68 with small block and 2 1/2 in exhaust
Who has the best sound and deal?? Not too loud and not to quiet.
Would like the original factory sound with the fiberglass covers. Do all covers require lots of body work or just light sanding?

Have looked at all the different companies, Allen's, Sweet thunder, and all the Corvette catalogs.

Any real differences? I see some offer free shipping that sounds good.
I live in Az so I'm not worried about stainless steel to keep from rusting. The last time it rained was January.

Thanks for any help.

Are side pipes a factory order option at one time?

68 didn't come with side pipes.
I like the looks and sound.
Aftermarket pipes and covers are a lot less
expensive than original.
Originals I believe started in 1969
Just trying to figure out what company would be the best
so I figured lots of guys on the forum have done the change over

Mine are the reverse flow style. Moderate at idle and cruising, loud under throttle. I have the fiberglass covers as well. They were on the car when I bought it and bubba used what ever screw he could find to mount them. I glassed the old holes closed and redrilled them and used the proper machine screw with a plastic washer to prevent cracking. They are painted to match the car color but I think its too much. I want to chrome them paint platers are a dieing breed. I might try wrapping the ends and leave the middle.

Love the car and the side pipes look great. That's what I'm looking for.
There is a chrome plater in Phoenix, about 200 miles away round trip.
may try them or just have them chrome painted locally.
Any problem with heat??
Thanks

Actually no. Theres a good gap on mine and the heat doesnt transfer well. Getting out after a 2 hour drive I put my hand right on them, may be warm or hot, but not burning at all.

I figure if they can chrome plate plastic model parts, someone can plate these, just no one around me. Mine are all blue still and the 2 others are obviously photo shopped. But it gives me a direction to try and go in

Hey 69Vett, that may just be the single most incredible Vette I've seen on this forum of any generation. I don't know how anyone can top this.

With respect to the finish of the covers.....

Years ago, I was involved with an oval track car, and although chrome wheels certainly enhanced the look of the car, we couldn't afford them. We stumbled into a decent looking alternative, however..

Our wheels came from our supplier with a thin coat of black paint on them. We also had a quart of "Brilliant Silver Base", used as an under base for candy colors. It was the 'Metalflake' brand, and I'm not positive they're still around, but maybe 'House Of Kolor' would have something similar. We figured, "Why not try it"?

Anyway, we shot the silver over the black, followed by a coat of clear. While certainly not chrome, the silver was very bright, and wheels looked quite good. Just a thought..........

Warning to anyone considering Jet-Hot, Powder Coating, or Rechromeing.
all of these require extensive heat exposure, if you process the oem covers with heat.
They will curl up like a potato chip, the long middle pieces, been there done that.

I had to build a rigid steel fixture jig. to keep the long middle sections from Deforming,
during heat Exposure processing.
