Default Hidden Reverse Lights

I plan to put the bubble tail lights in my '74 after it's painted. I will miss having reverse lights. Any ideas?

P.S. I hate hate hate LEDs, not gonna do that!

I hear you on the mod, it's a great idea even when a person uses stock lens rather than bubbles it's safer and looks better, the 68 got this right, oldgto did it on his car, mrvette has different backup lamps,
While I think Richards is super sweet trick and I love LEDS I do not love them for everything especially on old classics that are otherwise stock,
My dad did a mod like this to his Avanti and added small old school mini driving lights to his license plate frame,
I like how 68's did it and when I get there will look at that if I do not do something like Richards,
I have also seen surface mount generic dome lights, little rectangle ones that might just work,

I`m putting 4 stop / tail / turn lights on my 71, and I plan to use the LEDs on the license plate holder.
But if I wasn`t "into LEDs", and was "not gonna do that"....
Id consider putting some stock 68 style reverse lights on.

You could get a pair of 68 back up lights and mod them in before you paint it. Wiring should be easy!

My 75 with bubbles, i looked at the leds but passed on them, just not old school.

Never missed the backup light after the bubbles. With your foot on the brake petal the illumination from the four brake lights would far excede the backup light

Interesting, I hadn't considered that. Maybe I'll just see how I do backing in the garage with all four brake lights.

I don't want to use '68 lights in the bumper, as I am shaving all emblems, alarm lock, antenna, corvette letters on bumper, and side markers.

It is unbelievable that GM would spend all of that money to fabricate the intricate 68 backup light rear valance panel, with a special fiberglass reinforcement that also holds the borrowed Oldsmobile backup light (that has two wires and a special connector on it..which the current correct Oldsmobile reproductions do not have) and then drop them for 1969. They did this for only one reason, to save money.
I read that GM would give them the money to produce a new car, but every year they had to cheapen the design to save them money. Lou.

I have Grote # 9076 brake lenses on all 4 lights. There are a pair of 1"x3" surface mount lights mounted to the bumper cover support on either side of the license plate. Lights are barely visible but provide enough light to back into a dark garage.

LED's on bottom edge of the bumper. Not really bright but satisfy legal requirements for inspection (or if someone hits me when I am backing up).

Those last two are pretty slick! However, I was thinking more of some that faced rear, to do double duty;for backing up, and to ward off the a$$hole behind me with the blinding blue headlights! Maybe something behind the seats in the rear window?

I thought they passed a law(only Texas maybe?)that stated you could not cover any of the license plate.

I'm glad you started this thread, I'm replacing the backup lights with brake lights, but I haven't figured out what I want to replace the backup lights with yet, if anything. Do they look for those during safety inspections in Texas? I want to leave commiefornia at some point and Texas is probably where I will go.

In Texas, you don't need backup lights. If the car is 25 years or older, no smog check. If you run antique plates, you don't have to have it inspected at all, and registration is only $50 for five years. No front plate with antique plates, either.

The frame only covers around the edge, and the lights are along the top, or sides of the frame.
License plate frames are legal here in Florida, but I don`t know about other states.

That is actually pretty cool, regular bulbs could go back there. But, for revenge against the guy in my rearview mirror blinding me, maybe some LEDs to give him a "taste of his own medicine"?
