Default Astro vent

74 convertible with No air conditioning.

A few questions ..
- my understanding of astro vent is that the intent is to pull outside air "through" the car and out the louvered vents on the convertible deck.
Is that really a big deal for me with a convertible? Mostly trying to eliminate heat from cabin right now. Putting a valve in the heater supply hose from manifold was a big improvement.
- in warmer weather, should i be trying to close the footwell vents but leave the dash level vents open ? I beleive the dash vents are solely opened closed by the pull levers right below the vent but the footwell vents are controlled by console cable operated levers ?? Can someone confirm ?
- i have read about a hood seal. Where is this seal and what is its purpose ? Should by 74 vert with base engine have one ?? If so any pics of what it should look like if installed properly?

That`s the idea, as far as I get it. The foot well vent draws air from the top cowl area (where the wipers are), and I think the seal goes along the front edge of that section, to keep engine heat out of the wiper trough?
I think you`ve already done the most common cure to cabin heat with the heater hose cut-off.
Next bet would be to ensure all the other seals, foam trans tunnel collar, and insulation are in place.

Hi v,
The purpose of the Astro Vent system was to replace the typical side vent windows that cars typically had. The idea was to move fresh air through the car with the windows up.
The round Astro Vents in the dash, and the lower vents in the kick panels, are all controlled by hand.
When functioning properly the right side wheel on the heater/defroster controller operates the vents mounted in the rear bulkhead.
When the wheel is at the 'H' position the vents are closed. When it's rotated to the 'C' position the 2 vent doors are opened by a vacuum pod mounted to the side of the doors.
Certainly works, but will never be mistaken for a/c.
Regards,
Alan

Agree that its not a/c !
So does the pull out lever then open/close both the dash level vent *and* the floor level vent (for each side respectively)?

Also - should my 74 have a hood seal to keep engine heat from entering that airflow plenum ? If so where is that unit (pics would be great)

I think your first statement is true..... at least it is for my 71. Foot well vent controlled by lever on the console..... dash vents by pull-out on lower dash.

I`m not sure if your 74 has a hood to cowl seal..... but I don`t see why it wouldn`t.

Hi,
I believe all 68-82 cars used a hood seal that was glued to the hood and sealed the rear, and about 12"of the sides, of the hood surround gutter.
