Hi everyone, I am looking around and found a 68 convertible vette 4 spd, 350 eng and both tops. Car has some cosmetic for the age but the serious question is the transmission leaks along with the power steering. Now I can replace the cylinder on the steering and prob correct it, but the trans has me concerned. Any good or bad stories on the 68? I like the car but the trans will at least have to be serviced to fix the seals/gaskets.
Can be leaking from the pump or the front main seal in the transmission. Very common as these cars are not driven enough and the seals dry up and leak. Have him deduct for the trans work, couple hundred I would guess to reseal. If the car runs and drives, shifts well and keeps cool, go for it. Be realistic, this car is near 50 years old. So it marks its territory, little oil here and there.
I would be concerned about frame condition than a leaky transmission. Make sure it is solid. The leaking oils will perserve the frame!

Rob- check for electrical/vacuum problems- especially wiper motor, headlight and wiper door openers, heater blower motor, interior lights and gauges. The 68 has some peculiar, one-year electrical features that will take more time to sort out than basic mechanical repairs. Especially, if some previous owner has cut, spliced and replaced wiring so it is difficult to figure out what was done. It took me weeks to sort out the windshield wiper motor problem on my 68 convert and I removed literally yards of "extra" wires installed to hook up an after-market stereo. Most 50 year old Vettes have had some type of electrical modification. Good luck on your 68.
Remember power steering fluid is the same color as trans fluid if its red fluid its probably the lines. Mine rotted and rubbed themselves raw and leaked.
If it's heavy gear oil 85/90wt its probable it came from the tail piece seal on trans.
Some of these will heal themselves if the car is driven weekly.
As said, frame 1st concern especially in a convertible.
If it needs a frame swap your in a world of doo doo.

My power steering leaked from the return line which just uses a hose clamp, ended up just replacing all the lines, very easy. No leaks since. Tranny leaked out rear seal due to age and rear bushing was worn. seal was all cracked. Bought a snap on bushing removal tool on ebay. Used a needle punch to get the seal out. Very easy repair for both.
