I have been enjoying driving my 68 BB convert - with all problems fixed - with the top down for the last several weeks in sunny Northern VA. That is until last week when I thought I would remove the light film of dust on the windshield with one swipe of my perfectly operating (required weeks of trouble shooting) wipers. The wipers went part-way up and stopped. Jiggling the switch, checking for loose wires, etc. did not fix the problem. After all of the frustrating work to get the wipers working, due to numerous bubba problems by the PO, now they do not work again. Many bad words were said. So- back to the diagnostic drawing board. At about 1 AM later that evening, as I am still trying to think what else to check, I wondered if perhaps I had bumped the wiper bypass switch located right above where my leg goes to the gas pedal. So up out of bed I get, go to the garage in my slippers and sit in the car to check the switch. I turned it slightly to see if it was out of position. Immediately the wipers moved and settled back into "park" position. I was elated that I had found the problem, until the washers also kicked into operation and sprayed me right in the face. I think these cars have a mind of their own.
Ron,
that is why my over ride **** was missing when I purchased mine I think.
PO probably got sick of it activating and threw it in the river I bet.
I bumped it one night and killed my battery. It is an instant drain
over night.
I replaced the **** but keep an eye on it.
Your wiper over ride light should have illuminated as well if the bulb works.
The ground wire is very flimsy and grounds to the over ride bracket via a mounting screw.

Marshall- the **** was missing on my 68 when I got the car also. Probably since the little allen screw does not hold it in place very well (it fell off once since I installed the new ****). I forgot about the battery drain! My early 68 does not have the warning light on the dash for the over-ride switch. I think I will use a small piece of duct tape (call me Bubba) to hold the **** in the off position. I had to also run a ground wire to the car's windshield frame just to make the switch work. I'd like to find the drunken GM engineer who designed this system.
Ron Ha Ha yeah its quite an arrangement.
I almost forgot my after market **** fell off too.
I took some black electrical tape and wrapped the stem then forced the **** over it.
Set screw then had some meat to bite into.

I took a white paint pen and made a dot on the front that I can see. It lets me know if its in the proper position as I too have the early 68 without that light indicator
