I have a couple of former STL employees in my local club. I have posed the same question and their response is that the St. Louis Corvette plant was very old and quite limited in capacity. With the coming of the C4 a great deal of automation and state of the art manufacturing techniques were to be used. A retrofit of the existing plant was out of the question. As someone else pointed out the Bowling Green plant already existed and was available providing more space in less time. The St. Louis plant also produced passenger cars but in a much larger building that the Corvette plant was next to. GM did build a new plant in Wentzville ( a western suburb) that passenger car production moved to. Today it builds Chevy Colorado pickups, vans etc. I consider it a real pleasure talking to these guys who were there during C-2 and C-3 production. They are full of great stories and are solid Corvette guys!

Hi,
I believe John Hinkley (CF member JohnZ) is one of the best known people with roots in the St.Louis Corvette plant.
Certainly the articles he's written for various publications, the presentations he's put together, and his library of photos are a wonderful source of reference for all of us; especially for fans of mid-year cars.
His article about the operation of the Flint engine plant is a MUST read.
5000 engines per day, 2 engine lines, one producing 170 engines per hour (one every 21 seconds), and the other producing 110 per hour ( one every 32 seconds)!!!!!
Regards,
Alan

A bit off topic. Read a story (late 60's) about a man that had purchased a luxury vehicle but was never identified in story. The car always had a knocking noise that couldn't be found. After many trips to the dealer they finally cut a hole in a rear inner fender. They found a coke bottle tied to a string hanging there.

I just finished The Birthplace of Legends book Mike recommended.
It was a great read.
A must read.
I worked at a GM dealership (Oldsmobile) 1980-84.
I enjoyed the job and the guys.
Reading the Legends book brought back some fond memories.
