Will Not Start
Hey Guys,
My 1974 is turning over but no spark. I have changed the batter, rotor button, points and rotor cap but nothing. I am getting power to the coil but it seems a little weak on my test light. Any ideas?

Was it running before you changed any parts? Make sure connector to distributor is fully plugged in. Make sure rotor is turning. Does the car backfire when trying to start?

No, its been sitting for a number of years, Im not getting anything other that positive to the + side of the coil. Its not going any farther that that.

Did you check to see if rotor is spinning? Is the carburetor getting fuel? Did you pull the wire off the coil and check for spark? T is hard to see in sunlight. After sitting, the fuel lines and filter could also be plugged with sludge and rust.

This is a flow chart for a 1980. It should give you some ideas if you can read it.
Sorry, I assumed it was an HEI.

Hopefully the fuel is even good enough to ignite and run the engine.
I assume you set the dwell also???? Because just installing points in the distributor is not all that needs to be done...they need it be adjusted and set.
And I have seen a few times where the advance weights cannot move and advance and spring back due to sitting for a long time.

test for spark coming from coil, very carefully hold coil wire about 3/16" from gnd. point.
use insulating tool to hold coil wire, have someone turn over starter, Spark Yes or No ?
No ... your trigger (points) or coil is not working.
Yes, your Dist is not doing it's job correctly.

pull off the cap and rotor. look at the points. are they opening when you turn the distributor by hand? if you have power to the coil, and the grounds are good, you can physically make a spark by using a screwdriver to manually open and close the points quickly.
put your DMM on the points and verify they are grounded when closed and infinite when open.
test both primary and secondary windings on the coil. what are the readings on those?
