i repaced the battery and doing so something shorted out..i only have headlights...lost dash lights tail lights running lights..brake lights work.
I pulled all the related fuses and they are all good.
any ideas as to what it might be or steer me in the right troubleshoot direction...please help..i want to cruise..thanks
You have blown a fusible link, specifically "Fusible link A" according to my '79 schematic. It feeds everything except the headlights. The links are in the red wires just before they connect at the starter motor. Look for the one with a swollen and blackened area.

thanks for the reply
haven't gotten to it yet
but I will check there first... I hope that's it
again tks
Suit yourself, but a harness is expensive if all you need is a fusible link. Your owner's manual may list the links and their amperage.
FWIW: disconnect the battery before playing with the link.
well I finally got the time to test the fuse links and they are good...a strong 12v on each side of them...I just bought a new headlight switch..gonna try that next...all gauges work...no dash lights or running lights.....only the headlights and brake lights work...we re post after I do the headlight switch...looks like loads of fun there!!
thanks for your replys!
Double check your "tail lamp" fuse. Use a meter or replace it. It will kill tail lights, markers, and instrument lights. Measure on both sides of it for 12V.
Just saw your previous post. Measure at the fuse for "tail". If you have 12v there, you need to work toward the headlight switch. If you don't, it's before you get to the fuse and not the switch.

ok and thanks for the heads up
sure would be much easier
I checked all the pertaining fuses but I will recheck that 1
again thanks...I keep thinking its so stupid it had to be a fuse...but they all looked good...will test them next....thank you
The fuse blocks are prone to rust and corrosion . I would start there to see if you have power to the right fuse. It's odd that it started after the battery change but possible just a bad connection or a fine break in an old fuse that's hard to see. I've seen fuses not fully blow but get a hair line crack due to age and hard to see at a glance.
