Default Electric Fans / 12 Volt Ignition

Hello Forum,

I recently put electric fans in my 76. I was driving around yesterday and I saw the temp going quite a bit North of 200. I pulled over and noticed the fans were not spinning at all. After letting the engine cool down, I started it back up, and the fans came back on. After driving it around for a bit, they turned off again. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I used the wiper motor for "Ignition 12 volt". Or if anyone knows why they are doing this.

Thanks

The wiper motor 12V is good to run the relay, but not the fans. You need a good source for the fans. I used 12v from my starter to power the fans. Use 10 or 12 gage wire from the starter to the relay.

Assuming you are using a relay and a temperature switch, make sure it is wired so that the 12V power line is normally off, then turned on by the relay. Fan power should be run through pins 30 and 87 of the relay. If you are using 30 and 87A, the fan will be powered on when the car is cool and turn off when it gets hot.

Couple of pics:

You should have 2 relays. The first one for the temperature sensor and the second to power the fans as soon as the air conditioning is turned on.

Here is a span fan schematic that should work for any fan with a temperature sensor.

I am a little confused.... What do radiator fans have to do with air conditioning?

The fan draws air through the condenser. With the mechical fan on your engine there was always air being drawn through the condenser. Either mechanically or because of your speed. Without the fan drawing air through the condenser you will damage the air conditioner.

So as soon as your air conditioning comes on the electric fan must come on.
