I have had my 1971 Coupe for a few weeks and have begun accumulating a list of things I need to address. One is the exhaust. The car sounds like an old junk pickup. The car has the original exhaust system, at least the manifolds and pipes are original. I am not sure about the mufflers. But, one has a few small holes. I checked the manifold numbers and they are correct. If I understand correctly, the 270hp 350 had 2" exhaust. I was thinking of going 2.5" with either chambered exhaust or a Magniflow system, from manifolds back. Is there anything I need to consider? Is this going to improve the sound and/or performance? I believe I can get 2" into 2.5" downpipes. I found a number of systems online for 350 4 speed cars. Am I going to run into problems with this sort of setup? I tend to be OCD and work through every detail before I order parts.
When this is done, rear main seal. Ironically, the seal wasn't leaking, but after putting a couple hundred miles on the car, it started. I doubt I am set up to replace it myself.
Hi SRQ,
The optional LT-1 engine used the 2" manifolds and had head pipes that started at 2" and then expanded to 2-1/2" as you're thinking about.
I'm not knowledgable enough to know what if any actual benefit to your 350/270 the 2-1/2" exhaust will be.
I'd think any any benefit won't be realized unless you do some intake, head, and cam work to your engine.
As far as sound is concerned the mufflers you decide to use will determine that. Again, the 350/270 is a pretty docile so it can create so much 'drama'.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
