My wife and I buy storage units occasionally, and out of the last one I found like a dozen 8 track tapes. They look to be pretty good ones, from what I can tell. Does anybody collect these anymore? I don't want to just trash them.
Don't trash them, I sure someone can use them... I have a few of them. When I go to car shows, I display them. I put one or two on the dash, put them on the seat or center console.. A long with an old Texaco paper map... The young people today can't read a road map... lol
People today, get in the car put there destination in the phone or the GPS and go. Back in our day, you opened up a paper map and planned you trip. It took a little thinking...
I guess that makes me old fashioned. When I went to look at the 68 convertible I stopped and bought a road map of California. Came in very handy finding a way around Los Angeles so I didn't have to drive through the city and I found an eight track tape player with some other stuff I had in storage. I may even put it in my old pickup.
Never had more than a dozen "albums" myself, another dozen recorded from stereo music, but I added an 8-track player in my first car as soon as possible. That was mid-1970's. My older sister had a portable player during late 1960's and it was amazing to me. Unfortunately by the time I was really getting into those things the cassette took over, which I thought was a step backward to begin with. Had to adjust to the change, or lack of 'track change'. CD's were just around the corner by then too.
Worst thing about 8-track tape cartridges for me was the foil on loop coming loose. At least they were fairly easy to fix.
My best friend had an old Studebaker Lark with an 8 track that he wired up and had on the floor in front. Cat Stevens, James Brown, Am Green... Then cassettes got big. Great times!
I have about a dozen I display when I put my 78 in a show. My 8 track player works, but I don't play it at shows. I have three bluetooth speakers in the car synched with an old phone. On the phone I have the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever which plays through the speakers. In the tape deck I have the Saturday Night Fever 8 track. People think its really playing. Gets a lot of attention and comments.
